Tip of the Day-Wear Your Lipstick's TRUE Color

    By the beauty buff · November 10, 2009 · 0 Comments · 27 Views

According to makeup artist and Mark Cosmetic Expert, Anthea King, if you really like the way lipstick looks in a tube, prime your lips with a dab of foundation before applying. It turns your lips into a bare canvas and the color appears more true.   Thanks to Anthea King and the In Style Fall 2009 Makeover Issue! We'll hear more about Anthea King's Fall makeup picks in my upcoming interview with her. Coming Soon!

    Boxed Beauty Kits

    By the beauty buff · November 5, 2009 · 0 Comments · 45 Views

I know it seems like I'm on a Sephora binge with all the accolades they've received from me lately but I feel like it's my civic duty to a) vote and b) tell you when I find something deliciously fabulous that gets me kid in a candy store excited.

So here's another way they're making our lives easier and more fun: Boxed Kits of customer favorite products. Each kit has travel size versions of different skin and beauty products for your lips, eyes, skin and face. Some of my favorite products are featured in each set such as Duwop Private Red (in the Lip Service Kit), Guerlain Powder Pearls for the Face bronzer (in the Glitz & Glam Shimmer and Shine Kit) and Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion (in the Radiant Skin Regimen Kit).

This sounds like the perfect little holiday stocking stuffer (hint, hint). Since I'm such a beauty junkie, the brand variety is enticing and lets be honest I'm not sure I'd be able to afford the regular size version of some of these fine products! Take a look at all the miniature sets here: Sephora Favorites

Organic Must Have-Squeaky Clean & Smooth

    By the beauty buff · October 30, 2009 · 0 Comments · 38 Views

Talk about a two-in-one crowd-pleaser. I recently tried Elizabeth's Wild Hair Shaving Soap ($7.50, thejoyofsoap.com) and it's now a shower time favorite. It may look like your average handmade soap but this thick slab of sudsy meat is the answer to so much more!

The Joy of Soap is the eco-friendly company that makes this and several other innovatively crafted, all-natural organic bath products. The delicious smelling treats are infused with essential and fragrance oils and ingredients such as ginger, lemon, sweet orange and lavender. Yummy!

I'm loving Elizabeth's because of how multifaceted it is and efficient it makes me in the shower! Can you imagine, a soap that actually saves you time in the morning? The bar contains peppermint essential oils, ground pumice and willow bark. The ground pumice gently exfoliates your body, the peppermint oil makes you feel alert and tinglingly refreshed (kinda important in the morning) and the willow bark (known for its medicinal qualities-it contains salicylic acid) helps smooth out your "wild hairs" while shaving. This budget friendly wonder-bar left my skin feeling smooth and clean and cut my shower time in half!

Instead of fumbling around with shaving creams, body exfoliants and washes, I had one item that took care of 60 percent of my showering routine activities. So, if you're trying to be efficient, economical and eco-friendly and enjoy doing it this just might be the bar for you!

Tip of the Day: Mixing Mascaras

    By the beauty buff · October 27, 2009 · 0 Comments · 122 Views

Don't be afraid to mix and match!

When applying mascara, most people tend to stick to one tube at a time. Instead of being mascara-monogamous, try using more than when coating your lashes.

Use one slick of a lengthening formula, for Twiggy-esq lashes, like Rimmel London's LYCRA Lash Extender ($7.29 CVS). For your second coat go for high voltage volume that separates and curls your eye framers. Try Rimmel London Glam' Eyes Mascara ($3.74, Walgreens) or ModelCo's FATLASH ($32, thebeautymark.com).

Mixing mascaras will give you full dramatically long lashes that scream sexy without looking like your trying. It's a false eyelashes feel without the glue or work.

Fun fact: Rimmel knows a thing or two about mascara. The company was started by French perfumer, Eugene Rimmel in the late 1800's. The cosmetics maven invented the first packaged mascara-which at the time was a mixture of Vaseline and coal dust. In fact the product was so popular, that the word rimmel still means mascara in several languages such as Portuguese, Dutch and Italian . Ahh the joys of applying coal dust to your eyes! Mascara has come a long way since then!

Sephora's Halloween Makeup Ideas & Solutions

    By the beauty buff · October 23, 2009 · 0 Comments · 114 Views

As usual Sephora has come up with a simple yet ingenious way to make all of our lives easier. With Halloween a week away, everyone's scrambling to put together a costume that’s funny, sexy, relevant, timely and oh yeah makes you look AWESOME. With people posting (what has now become their annual) Halloween party pix on Facebook almost instantaneously, don't we all feel the added pressure to one-up our previous costumes and have friends comment on how creative and fabulous we look!? C'mon admit it!

Well, our favorite megastore is now helping us achieve and (perhaps inspire) the look that will complete your costume and new alluring persona. Each Sephora Brand Halloween Kit ($19, sephora.com) has the essentials to conjure up three different looks. The looks include a vampire, witch and rock star or doll, fairy and angel or Cleopatra, peacock or Greek goddess. After experimenting with these kits the costume possibilities will be endless and you'll be the Facebook Halloween superstar you know you are! A big thanks goes out to one of my favorite blogs, Makeup Bag, for keeping us all in the know about this amazing find!

    Tip of the Day-Spooning

    By the beauty buff · October 22, 2009 · 0 Comments · 55 Views

Is spooning the new way to look refreshed in the morning? According to Molly Sims it is!

The model-actress recommends keeping a spoon in the refrigerator to put on your eyes. By leaving the chilled spoon (or two) on each eye for five minutes you'll be able to reduce puffiness around the eyes. Having a spoon in your fridge at all times is an easy, accessible way to look like you've had a few more winks than your body knows you've actually had. Thanks to Molly and In Style Magazine for the innovative tip!

As for my advice: Don't forget to add caffeinated tea bags and thinly sliced cucumber slices to your refrigerated bag of tricks. Also use an eye treatment with caffeine in it then gently tap your finger around the delicate under eye area to increase circulation. Limit your intake of processed food which tends to be loaded with sodium (salty foods cause fluid retention which can lead to puffiness).

BE A CONFIDENT ONLINE BEAUTY BUYER

    By the beauty buff · October 20, 2009 · 0 Comments · 40 Views

Although regular excursions to your local makeup counter is the ideal way to scoop up and test out new finds, not everyone has the time or energy to carve out what inevitably becomes hours of joyous product scavenging. Isn't that always the case? You go to buy one thing and somehow always end up finding two other items you never knew you needed to have! It's wonderful to have an expert eye navigating which colors and compacts you'll radiate in isn't it? And you yourself can always tell whether that teal shadow you just tried on gives you a modern day smoky eye sparkle or conjures up a striking resemblance to Mimi from The Drew Carey Show.

That's why online makeup shopping seems so daunting for so many people. How can you really tell whether you'll like how a shade of lipstick looks or if an eye shadow palette compliments your skin tone? Once you buy it and open the packaging are you stuck with it forever? Those fears would turn anyone away from making your beauty buys a one-click process.

However, places like Sephora.com and Beauty.com have already anticipated your apprehension and adjusted accordingly. At Beauty.com many of the store's makeup products have a 100% Color Guarantee. This allows you to buy makeup online and if you're not happy with the color, return it for a full refund. Although this only applies to products that have the 100% Color Guarantee logo and you won't get a refund for any shipping costs you incurred that ends up encompassing a lot of different products and hues!

Sephora.com provides similar services to accommodate its customers. If you order a product, try it on and don't like it you can return the item and get a full refund if its sent back within 60 days of purchase. So if an item is slightly used they'll take it back and pay for shipping costs.

    Yippee!

These two sites are in my opinion the best place to get the most variety, quality and reliability in customer service. So if you've ever hesitated about buying a blush or foundation shade this tid bit of information is for you! Click AWAY beauty lovers!

    A SAUCY UNIVERSAL RED

    By the beauty buff · October 20, 2009 · 0 Comments · 28 Views

Red lips are turning up everywhere this season and seem to be the must have makeup accessory for the Fall.

If you're tired of searching for the perfect crimson shade for your lips then you'll love Duwop's latest pout product, Private Red ($22, thebeautymark.com).

The scarlet tube is a color-changing concoction that morphs to adjust to each person's own unique chemistry. And ya know what? It really works! It goes on creamy (it's made of beeswax, castor oil and Vitamin E), doesn't dry out your lips and the color lasts all day. I'm talking -stays put after having drinks, food, yapping on the phone for an hour, you name it, its still on!

Private Red is my go-to red this season. I was struck by how Gwen Stefanie-glamorous it made me look. And while it looks great on me I was still pretty skeptical that it would look good on everyone and change to suit different colorings. Low and behold, The Beauty Mark's lovely blond and blue eyed Jackie Champagne informed me this is her absolute favorite new lipstick as well! From two completely different ends of the complexion spectrum, Private Red comes out the winner! Amazing!

So if you're dying to find the perfect red to compliment your new Fall wardrobe and self look no further than this sexy-inducing, lipstick on your collar kinda shade!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY L'OREAL!

    By the beauty buff · October 5, 2009 · 0 Comments · 53 Views

A happy birthday is in order for the beauty juggernaut L'Oréal! The world's largest cosmetics and beauty company turned 100 this year. Fabuleux!

It's hard to believe this powerhouse was started by just one person. French chemist, Eugene Schueller developed an innovative hair color formula and began manufacturing and selling it to Parisian hairdressers. Today L'Oréal  is a multi-billion dollar global company known for its cosmetics, fragrances, hair and skin care products. I mean who doesn't own at least one L'Oréal  product? L'Oréal  also owns several other well known brands such as Redken, Kérastase, Maybelline New York, Lancome, Kiehl's, Giorgio Armani Cosmetics and Fragrances, YSL Cosmetics, Skinceuticals and La Roche-Posay to name a few. I know you own at least one of these products! The company in fact, now produced more than 80,000 products and has 23 brands under its belt. In addition it creates 7,000 new formulations annually. Translation? On a daily basis, scientists are inventing over 19 different formulas to make up new products.

What's amazing is what they've endured in their time as a business. In this current economic recession we've seen many companies in this industry forced to close. It's incredible to think that during all the dramatic twists and turns of the past century (recessions, wars, even the Depression) L'Oréal  has remained a steady staple. Through out the hardest times, the iconic brand was even able to emerge as global conglomerate.

They're also no stranger to how major world crises affect women's beauty habits. Think post-World War II, ladies "putting their faces on" and never leaving the house without your red lipstick on.

With tough times ever present L'Oréal decided to do a survey on how women's beauty routines and habits are adjusting and being affected by the recession. The questions were asked to 4,000 women in the US and five European countries. Surprisingly they found that women have no desire to give up or cut back on their favorite products or services despite the economic crisis.

Here’s what else the Beauty Barometer study found:

*Nearly half of American women believe wearing makeup gives them an advantage at work and makes them feel more in control. (I don’t think I've ever gone sans makeup at work-even if that’s meant running a little late ;)

*The majority of women surveyed believe wearing makeup makes them feel more confident and believe it improves their self image. (without eyeliner and something on my lips I definitely feel self conscious)

    * Proving that beauty is recession-proof-nine out of 10 women in the US and Europe reported no change in makeup usage despite the economic crisis (Yup, no changes have been made on my end)

*Women won't compromise on their hair either-when it comes to saving money, most U.S. women surveyed (63 percent) have not cut their hair to make it less expensive to maintain

    * The three most popular makeup items U.S. women rely on are lipstick, mascara and foundation

*72% of U.S. women believe that wearing makeup cheers them up and makes them feel better about life. In fact, 1 out of 4 U.S. women surveyed said they recently bought a makeup item to cheer themselves up during this recession

    * Nearly 40% of U.S. changed their hairstyle to cheer themselves up while 1/3 of women in the US and Europe have changed their hair color for the same reason

    * U.S. women are twice as likely to polish their nails to cheer themselves up than are French and German women

While many people need to make cut backs right now and there are always far more important items to keep replenishing than a jar of your favorite expensive face cream or tube of red lipstick, it's sometimes much more about the confidence your fav items give you. Confidence has a very powerful effect on people. What this survey shows is that woman still want to look and feel good. So even if you have to keep recycling the same few outfits over and over in your wardrobe, if your hair looks good and your lips are glossy and bright, you'll still be able to feel like a million bucks. There in lies the magic of beauty products. It's a relatively cheap confidence and morale booster.

Do find these poll results accurate as to how you feel? Would you be able to go to work without makeup on? Do you feel better and more confident with it? How does having it on or off make you feel? Furthermore, have you been cutting back on purchasing any of your beauty staples or services because of the recession? Let us all know!

Petroleum Jelly: The New Best Friend You've Probably Always Had

Sephora blogger Jenny Muller (hmm someone has the best job ever) wrote a post a while back on The Lemon Drop that I found to be incredibly helpful. She discusses the merits and multi-faceted benefits of the one and only…Vaseline! Petroleum Jelly is an incredible mixture of mineral oils and waxes that when blended together create the concotion we know and love. The melting point is just above body temperature so it literally melts into your skin.  Some people use it for absolutely everything (especially protecting skin against the elements) and even as a daily moisturizer. Not sure how I feel about that but this stuff IS a mini-miracle worker and crisis averter.

Grab a jar of petroleum jelly and try these 15 tricks:

    1. Coat your cuticles in Vaseline a few times daily to soften them up and prevent jagged nails.

    2. Before you head outdoors, rub a little on your cheeks to prevent chapped skin. *

    3. Lengthen the life of your lotion by mixing it with a little Vaseline.

    4. Fake a dewy glow by dabbing it on your cheekbones and brow bones.

    5. Super dry skin? Rub on a light layer of petroleum jelly.

    6. Four words: Best lip gloss ever.

    7. DIY paraffin treatment: Slather Vaseline on your hands and feet, then wrap them up in a hot towel (nuke it in the microwave first) for 5 minutes.

    8. Love that trick? Try the overnight version: Cover your feet in Vaseline, pull on some socks, and treat your tootsies to some beauty rest.

    9. Rub a little on your lashes for ultra-shiny fringe.

    10. Tame unruly brows (and give them a super-shiny sheen).

    11. Make a cream liner or blush out of any powdered beauty product: Smear a swatch of powder on the back of your hand, then rub in a small (small!) amount of Vaseline. Voila!

    12. Instant smoky eye: Apply a little Vaseline over black eyeliner, then lightly smear it for a messy, smoky look.

    13. A little petroleum jelly around your hairline keeps hair dye from staining your skin.

    14. Fight frizz and hide split ends by rubbing a little Vaseline into the tips of your hair and around your part.

    15. Believe it: Vaseline can remove even the toughest waterproof mascara and no-budge eyeliner. Smear some on your lids, then use a clean, dry towel to wipe the day off.

    * Do note that you should test out Vaseline on your skin several times before applying it directly on
your face as a moisturizer. For some people, it does make them break out while for others it has no affect.

At $2.29 a jar you really can't go wrong with this!

    Bright Eye Beauty

    By the beauty buff · September 21, 2009 · 0 Comments · 67 Views

Your eyes say it all. By keeping your peepers bright and alert you'll be able to add on any sexy, alluring look of your choosing.

No matter how you glam up your eyes-whether it be a smoky eye complete with tons of smudgey black liner or an au natural palette of earthy neutral shadows the real key to achieving a complete look is by sporting a pair of healthy looking eyes. No matter how much glittery goodness you sprinkle on your lids, nothing screams tired, hungover or harboring a cold more than a pair of red, puffy eyes. If you feel like you’re a tissue box away from a full on allergy attack, chances are you look like you are too. That’s not so hot…or conducive with maintaining a smoldering aloof stare while out at your fav. hot spot –checking out the man meat. It doesn’t seem to matter what the reason is for your watery aggravated eyes because you somehow always end up looking like the needy, high maintenance chick rather than the sophisticated, chic lady who just happens to look like she’s crying because of allergies. Fear not! No matter what the reason is- you, your eyes and as a result your whole face can be saved by a few simple solutions.

In order to get the whites of your eyes looking bright, alert and well…white, use eye drops to get rid of redness and alleviate the itchy sensation that makes rubbing your eyes feel so good and tempting.

Try Visine Totality Multi-Symptom Relief ($5.99, drugstore.com). Use 1-2 drops up to 4 times a day and notice how much less dry, itchy and aggravated your eyes feel. These drops are also ideal to use before getting ready to go out for the evening. Your makeup will pop when painted against a white contrasting backdrop otherwise known as the sclera. This new solution (compared to the company’s older original formula) does an effective job of protecting your eyes against dust and irritants all day long.

To depuff the eyes and reduce dark circles try Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti-Puff Eye Roller ($13, CVS). The slender green tube contains caffeine and Vitamin B5 to works its magic. Furthermore the rolling ball gently massages the skin and feels moisturizing and cooling on the skin. It’s great to use under your eye makeup and feels light and hydrating! It’ll feel like you’re using chilled caffeinated tea bags without the time and effort.

To remove makeup and sooth the eyes, try Visine Total Eye Soothing Wipes. They feels soft and gentle and are a great alternative to rubbing your eyes. Experts say that rubbing your eyes can wrinkle the sensitive skin around and more importantly can actually scratch your retina. Using the wipes on your eyes when they get super itchy will alleviate the itchy sensation and calm down the redness. If the alternative is rubbing them, this tub is a must-have.

Lip Service: Sexy Shades for Every Skin Tone

    By the beauty buff · September 3, 2009 · 0 Comments · 79 Views

Let your kissable shade do all the talking. A vibrant lip shade lights up your whole face and brings warmth to your skin. In fact, in these hard economic times, women are turning to their beloved and newly acquired lip shades to boost their moods and succeed in looking glamorous and beautiful without having to splurge on a new pair of Jimmy Choos. So basically purchasing a few new lipsticks and glosses is a way for you to save money this season! Who would have thought!?

Although Summer is unofficially over you can still always rock bright summery shades like juicy watermelons, raspberries, plums, cherries and more! So let’s find the lip shade that's going to make your skin sparkle.

New York-based celebrity makeup artist, Beau Nelson (whose worked with Brooke Shields, Iman and Marcia Cross to name a few) says "A great rule of thumb about finding a great everyday lipstick is to find a "Your Lips But Better" (YLBB) shade, which is something that closely matches the natural shade of your lips but in a slightly deeper tone.". If you're in the mood for something a little saucier to glam up your outfit you'll need a major pop of color. In fact the right shade for you might not look like your lips but will definitely compliment the color wheel you’re most accustomed to.

FAIR SKIN (Think Cinderella, Belle, Ariel and Snow White)

Nelson says fair skin looks great in bright colors, pastels and neutrals in pinkie shades. Peach based colors look vibrant on redheads while brunettes and blonds work pink based shades best. Also look into shades in gold, coral and mauve.

Emily Mullins, a 26-year-old Boston-based Blond, loves peachy pinks like Maybelline's VolumeXLSeduction lipgloss in Born With It (Shade 105) for an everyday look. "It plumps my lips yet gives me a natural glossy look", she says. For her evening look she leans towards plum shades like Bare Escentuals's Lipcolor in Spiced Raisin ($15, Sephora). The formula uses natural oils (like jojoba) and waxes to create a long lasting, moisturizing color.

For redheads look for lip shines that enhance your complexion and hair color. Try MAC LipGlass in C-Thru, a soft peach-beige with shimmer. Crimson-haired Anne Mulligan (a North Carolina native with fair skin) loves how natural the color looks on. Her go-to going out shade is MAC LipGelee in Jellybabe (both $14, maccosmetics.com). The thick gloss is a beautiful rose color that delivers high shine but is "fabulously smooth and not sticky at all".

Other recommendations include Stila's Lip Glaze ($22, Sephora) in Brown Sugar for fair skin and Vanilla for medium skin. Both shades are nudes with a golden shimmery tint (Brown Sugar) and pearly iridescent gloss (Vanilla). Or try a beautiful mauve shade like Clinique Lipstick in A Different Grape ($14, Department Stores)

    Stila Lip Glaze

    $22.00 by Stila at Sephora

    Different Lipstick

    $14.00 at Clinique

Red is also stunning on fair skin. Nelson says to find a bright red with blue undertones rather than orange. If you're going for high drama try a neutral full powered scarlet like Beaute Cosmetics Weightless Lip Crème in Masochist ($26, beaute-cosmetics.com), a shade from Nelson's own line that he uses on Dita Von Teese-who might even beat Gwen Stefani in the 'who can wear red lipstick and look eternally glamorous without ever overdoing it' category.

If you're more a medium-fair than fair (e.g. when you're tan or if you have red undertones) look for rosy or spiced neutrals. Try Nars Lip Gloss in Chelsea Girls) or Chihuahua (both $24, Sephora)–the former is a subtle nude beige and latter a glossy guava. Or try Bobbi Brown Lip Crayon in Honeysuckle and Pink Raspberry-creamy textured neutrals. Nelson says Bobbi Brown has a stunning array of neutral YLBB shades. Rachel Quintner, a DC based blond recommends in Praline ($22, Sephora). The dual lip liner and color revives lips using caffeine.

    Smashbox Doubletake Lip Color

    $22.00 by Smashbox at Sephora

MEDIUM DARK/OLIVE-TONED SKIN (Think Mulan and Princess Jasmine)

This is considered the most versatile of skin shades and can pull off most colors. Medium skin or skin with olive tones looks great in neutral nudes, beigey browns and mid-tone plums says Nelson. While darker shades can wear deep purple, pink, red and brown shades.

My all time favorite lip pick is a cherry-red tinted balm stick by Labello ($8.95, amazon.com). I discovered it in Italy and have been ordering online ever since. I'm addicted to this moisturizing lip treatment. The tint looks perfect on my lips and leaves a deep red stain that somehow never looks clowney. If you're looking for a subtle color try Clinique’s A Blushing Nude, the color is a soft rose that makes you look romantic and flushed. An editor-favorite that’s reached iconic status is the brand's Almost Lipstick in Black Honey (both $14, department stores). The sheer berry color is universally flattering and glides on leaving a just-bitten look. I love how bright and punchy L'Oreal Colour Juice Gloss in Cherry On Top is ($8.49 CVS). I layer it over Lipstick Queen's Oxymoron in Minor Crisis ($20, thebeautymark.com) and revel at how pretty it looks. I also love Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss in Cherries in the Glow ($7.99, Walgreens). A cranberry hue (similar to the shade Freida Pinto has been sporting) that’s not sticky. If you're feeling bold, try Johanna Thomas's favorite, Dior Addict Gloss in Fuchsia Poplin ($25.50, Nordstroms). If you're a pale-medium or have strong yellow undertones try mauve based shines like M.A.C. LipGlass in Pop Mode ($14, maccosmetics.com), or Chanel Glossimer in Imaginaire ($24.50, Saks Fifth Avenue). Embrace the color wheel!

    $14.00 at M·A·C

    Chanel Glossimer

$24.50 by Chanel at Saks Fifth Avenue

When wearing red lipstick keep the rest of your makeup minimal, it'll look classic in 50's Mad Men kinda way. I love Julie Hewett's Noir Reds ($23, thebeautymark.com). A collection inspired by Pearl Harbor, the film she worked on in which she created a variety of vintage-looking ruby lips. Belle Noir has an orange base which looks amazing against tan skin and Film Noir is a sheer blackberry that can look dark and sexy or flushed and lightly stained depending on how you apply it.

DARK SKIN (Think Pocahontas and Princess Tiana from the upcoming Disney feature The Princess and the Frog)

If you've got dark skin or have deep red undertones, you want to find shades with rich pigments. While your skin can pull off a variety of shades as well, deep plums, burgundies, browns, bronze and warm brick tones compliment your color best.

According to the editors of Instyle, Lancome Lipstick in Brick House ($25, lancome-usa.com) is the perfect balance between cherry and chocolate, ideal for darker skin. They also recommend a mauve-magenta mixture like Chanel Lipgloss in Bubble Plum ($27, uma.chanel.com) Or embrace the grape with MAC Lipstick in Diva ($14 department stores)-high wattage color in a reddish-burgundy. I also love CO Bigelow Lip Mentha Gloss in Violet Mint ($7.50 CO Bigelow). It feels tingly and fresh on your lips and adds just the right amount of color to look flirty and pulled together. Or if you're feeling kinda rustic try Lipstick Queen Saint in Rust. It's a gold flecked copper that looks dramatic without adding heavy matte layers.

Finding your perfect lip shade can be a daunting task. However, once you know what looks good on you, you'll be pleased as punch (a shade which incidentally looks great on most people) by what an instant glamour-maker you'll have to slick over your lips.

Beauty Junkies Can Now Get Their Fix at...Sears!?

    By the beauty buff · August 27, 2009 · 0 Comments · 60 Views

Yes, you read that right. The retail store that’s most widely recognized as a haven for home appliances and garden tools is now getting a “makeover” of sorts just in time for the back-to-school season.

Us beauty addicts will now be able to acquire some of our fav. cosmetics, fragrances, skin care and organic products from what used to be one of the most boring stores at the mall. No offense Sears! I’m a beauty junkie! I  remember the days when I was begrudgingly dragged along to the store to get the oil changed on our car and then painfully had to follow my dad around as he mercilessly (ok I exaggerate) spent hours meandering around the electronics and power tools departments. There was nothing shiny, colorful or sparkly in sight! There was, however, a plethora of shower curtains, linen sets, screw drivers and washing machines! It was pure torture for this eight year old future beauty buff and I'd written the store off until now. It's better late than never!

While Sears Beauty  will be available to everyone online at www.sears.com, only 13 select retail mall locations (such as Chicago, New York and Los Angeles) will have Sears Beauty in their actual stores, as of right now. What we can expect is a mixture of prestige (typically found in department stores) and mass (sold in drugstores) brands. Some of my favorite lines include Calvin Klein, L'Oreal, Maybelline, Cover Girl and Elizabeth Arden.

Grand opening festivities will take place August 29th through the 30th and September 5th and 6th and feature complimentary makeovers, gifts, samples and an opportunity to win some fun beauty booty. I don't know about you, but I love hearing the words ‘sample’ and ‘makeover’ especially when coupled with ‘complimentary’.

While Sears still has a long way to go to rival any of the other department store beauty counters (e.g. I could easily live my entire life from here on out in the beauty department at Nordstroms), incorporating some real products and cosmetics to their repertoire is really getting into the spirit of that whole “softer side of Sears” thing they'd talked about doing before. What I'd really like to see are the rows and rows of washing machines and lawn mowers replaced by shelves of gleaming skin firming creams and eye shadow pots. That would be my perfect universe, but hey I’ll gladly settle for some  lip gloss and nail polish!

So in honor of the new products available here are a few of my favorites:

I'm loving Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dri Fast Dry Nail Color ($5.00) in Blazing Blue and Uptempo Plum, both rich jeweled tones that are perfect for the Fall. I also love L’Oreal Sheer Juicy Lip Gloss in Raspberry Smash (shade 310, $8.50). The shades are bright and vibrant and the gloss smells yummy.

So the next time you’re at the mall and walk by Sears, pop in rather than walking past it (as usual) and see what beauty offerings they have in store for you!

    Teen Queen Glamour Uncovered!

    By the beauty buff · August 16, 2009 · 0 Comments · 160 Views

These young ones are my “Choice” for their stand out appearances at my nine year old cousin’s favorite awards show!

Last week was the 2009 Teen Choice Awards. While the show can err on the cheesy side from time to time it always brings a star-studded turn out of heart throbs, starlets and A-listers. The slime induced younger sibling of awards shows calls for a much more casual family-friendly wardrobe from our young fashionistas. Hair and makeup tend to be more polished, pretty and girl-next-door. Lil’ Kim pasties and purple wigs are banned and sent away for the little one’s rebellious older sister, MTV’s Video Music Awards. This year the looks were especially demure yet decidedly sophisticated and fresh. Here are a few of my favorite looks:

Teen Choice Awards 2009 - Arrivals

Amanda Bynes looked gorgeous with her Lauren Conrad-waves, soft pink glossy lips and subtle silvery shadow that encased her va va voom lashes and liner.

Teen Choice Awards 2009 - Arrivals

Julia’s niece looked like age appropriate perfection. Winged-tipped cat eyes and a neutral color palette for the rest of her face let her sleek side bang ponytail and amazing bib necklace dress do the talking.

Teen Choice Awards 2009 - Arrivals

I love Ashley Tisdale’s dark to light chestnut locks with hints of honey dangling delicately around face. The High School Musical bad-girl looks so much better as a brunette as it allows her to experiment with a much more flattering color range. Her tan skin and hazelnut eyes compliment the aubergine-navy smokey eye makeup and nude-pink lip shade she’s sporting perfectly.

Teen Choice Awards 2009 - Arrivals

Lea Michele, the Glee star and nominee for Choice Female Breakout TV Star, looked like a Grecian Goddess with her dark chocolate romantic waves and bronzed glow. Her hair was the definite winner in this look but her subtle yet total glamour makeup was perfect to support cascading waves and the most beautiful cannery yellow shaded dress.

Teen Choice Awards 2009 - Arrivals

While most looks on the grassy green carpet played up the eyes and toned down the lips, one actress chose to go against the grain and it paid off. Young Nickelodeon star, Keke Palmer, wore a crimson pout, coppery brown shadow, a dash of coal liner and blush that created a deep peachy flush. The emphasis on her lips worked well with her sparkly shrug, slicked hair and megawatt smile. Although the teen’s look was less subtle than most, she still managed to look young, fashion forward and the ever important age-appropriate.

While most stars shined with their perfectly coiffed tresses and airbrushed mugs, some missed the mark on this occasion. Here are a few ladies that needed a little less styling and a little more au natural finesse:

Teen Choice Awards 2009 - Arrivals

Selena Gomez’s makeup looks ethereal and beautiful but her overly done hairstyle and matronly dress make her look unnecessarily old and well beyond her just turned seventeen years. It’s ever so important, especially at shows like this, to dress and look your age! Selena, enjoy being a fabulous teenager and don’t try to look or act any older than you are. Sage advice from such a wise twenty-something, right!? :)

Teen Choice Awards 2009 - Arrivals

Teen Choice Awards 2009 - Arrivals

Kim Kardashian and Audrina Patridge look gorgeous as always but their newly flaxen haired dye job and highlights take away from that exotic, dark haired mystique that separated them from all the other Hollywood blondes. They’ll look stunning no matter what but in our opinion they need to stop trying to look like everyone else in Tinseltown and start loving their signature looks just as much as we do!

Teen Choice Awards 2009 - Arrivals

Finally, here’s our worst look of the night. Kat Von D’s newly stringy and straight blond (what we hope is a wig) ‘do is a mess. The color is ashy and looks horrible against her skin tone. Her eye makeup and lipstick shade looks clown-like and ages her whole face. While this would have been a great opportunity to promote her Sephora-exclusive makeup line she seems to have missed the boat completely. We miss her usual rocker-chic mixed with pinup girl glamour. No matter how heavily rimmed with liner her eyes were, she somehow always managed to rock a scarlet pout with  casual perfection. Kat we love your standard dark locks, dark eyes, and dark lips! Heck, I even dressed up as you for Halloween! We really hope this is a phase and you go back to being “you” really soon! Till then, we’re very sorry but you get a big frowney face from us! :(

Please note the Kat Von D “too cool for school” cool-chick snarl I’m trying desperately to embody!

Here’s the Kat we love! We know you’ll be back soon enough!

You'll Want to Bat Your Eyelashes for This!

    By the beauty buff · July 29, 2009 · 0 Comments · 143 Views

Lengtheners That Make Your Lashes Go the Distance

Everyone wants to go to the extreme to look beautiful. Jessica Rabbit lashes seem to be the length to beat. Celebs seem to magically roll out of bed and onto the red carpet with perpetually elongated masterpieces.  Their secret, however, seems to be out: lash growth enhancers are so hot and so 2009! With promises of longer, fuller lashes, what's not to love? However, with budgets tightening, are these pricey new finds worth the splurge or will lash glue and a wand's worth of DiorShow do?

If your eyes truly are the windows to your soul, it seems only fitting that you'd want the curtains to those portholes to look extra nice. While Tammy Faye Bakker might have had it all wrong with miles of goopy mascara and fake lashes that cramped every inch of her crowded lids, she did know the best way to get noticed. She wanted everyone to recognize her and did so by decorating her blinds with the same gusto as you would a Christmas tree. She certainly had the right idea.

Your lashes are your eye's calling cards. They frame your face’s most important feature and the way you wear them lets people know what kind of mood you're in. Long and dark = mysterious and sexy. Thick and full = Flirty yet coy. Winged and curled = Dramatic and spontaneous. It’s no secret the finishing touch to any look is a swipe of mascara or securely attaching your favorite pair of fakies.

In fact the world wide annual expenditure on mascara alone is more than $5 billion. The money is spent on tubes that will only temporarily enhance your eye's appearance. More recently, however, there’s been a boom in lash growth formulas that guarantee a more permanent, naturally longer and thicker look.

Among the most popular brands are Revitalash and Latisse but there's no shortage of other names popping up with their own concoctions. Peter Thomas Roth, tarte and FusionBeauty are some of the other labels vying for the attention of consumers. With so many products out there promising longer lashes it’s hard to know what really works. Beauty hubs are stocked with products promising Bambi lengtheners but which brands are worth the money and most popular? How do they actually work and how can we compare them in value, effectiveness and longevity with each other and our tried and true methods? Are these products safe to use and what are the side effects?  Furthermore, is it best to invest in one of these new solutions or skip it and settle for $5 fakes and your favorite mascara?

    Lash Lengthening Boom:

Eye doctors had been regularly noting the side effects of some of the drugs used to treat patients with Glaucoma-a debilitating eye disease. Patients using certain medications to treat the disease consistently grew long lush lashes.

Revitalash was  developed two years ago by an ophthalmologist for his wife whose lashes were damaged after intensive chemotherapy. What he developed worked so well that soon after it hit the market, people were clamoring for the wonder-tube.

Latisse was developed by Allergan; a company that produced the drug Lumigan-eye drops to help control the progression of Glaucoma. Allergan then began developing a formula, renamed Latisse, strictly for cosmetic use which was the first of its kind to receive FDA approval (last December). Bimatoprost is the active ingredient in the formulation of Latisse. It's a synthetic but natural-like compound or prostaglandin that is believed to stimulate the enzymes in your hair follicles, causing growth. Essentially, Bimatoprost are like seeds that when spread not only helps flowers to grow but also help the soil they're in to be extra fertile. Unlike other products available, you need a prescription to buy Latisse-a comfort to some and pain to others.

    Popularity Contest:

In discussing popularity, reliability and visibility Revitalash (skinstore.com) and Latisse (latisse.com to find a doctor near you) come out as clear favorites. Both were developed by medical professionals, have been tested the most and are most popular with consumers.

    RevitaLash

$135.00 by RevitaLash at Skin Store

In fact, Allergan’s chief executive predicted that the long-term worldwide sales of Latisse should exceed $500 million. While Revitalash’s Marketing team declined to discuss their annual profits, the buzz on the product is palpable.

Others have also developed lash stimulants. Here are our favorites:

The MultiplEye Lash Enhancer by tarte ($65, sephora.com) is great. NYC based, Celebrity makeup artist, Beau Nelson says actress Lindsay Price loves the way the affordable, always chicly-packaged product makes her lashes look.

    Tarte MultiplEYE Lash Enhancer

    $65.00 by Tarte at Sephora

Peter Thomas Roth's Lashes to Die For ($125, Sephora) offers a three month supply and promises longer, fuller lashes. The conditioner uses Vitamins A, C, E and B5 to increase hair growth.

Peter Thomas Roth Lashes To Die For Night Time Eyelash Conditioning Treatment

    Application 411

These boosters work by taking the brush-like applicator and lining it along the bottom of your lash line on a nightly basis.

For Revitalash a thickener keeps the solution from dripping or getting in your eye while Latisse provides disposable applicator to make things neat and easy.

Revitalash takes six weeks before you see any results. Put it on once a day for two months and then 2-3 times a week after that.  Jacquie Champagne,  a cosmetics boutique manager from Boston, said she saw a significant difference after a month. “My lashes have grown so much longer and darker that I don’t feel like need to wear mascara.  People ask me all the time if I've gotten eyelash extensions“, she says.

With Americans spending almost $1.3 billion on mascara alone last year, the idea of someone feeling like they don’t need to wear mascara seems almost unthinkable.

It may take a little longer for the results to show while using Latisse, which asks patients to apply it by lining the lid at the base of the eyelashes with an applicator, but show they will. A clinical test done by the company and approved by the FDA showed that eyelashes grew 25 percent longer, 106 percent thicker and 18 percent darker while using the drug after sixteen weeks.

While Revitalash does not make any such guaranties they do have a strong following, especially among celebrities (Paula Abdul, Fergie and Rihanna to name a few).  Hannah Murray, the company’s VP of Marketing, says celebrities love the product because of its effectiveness.

Latisse also has a strong star backing in the brand’s spokesperson, Brooke Shields. Nelson who works with Shields told us how much she loves the product. While the gorgeous star is naturally striking, the formula has made her lashes grow in only a month and the difference is significant. “Her lashes look absolutely incredible”, Nelson says.

Launch Party for LATISSE - Arrivals

    Side Effects and Safety

While none of these products have been on the market for that long, both have been poked and prodded by researchers.

Since both treatments use a variant of the same solutions to treat Glaucoma, there is a risk of experiencing some of the side effects those patients encounter.  Red eyes, itching, a darkening of the eyelids and possibly the iris color are some of the possible results. After testing, Allergan did note about 3 percent of the patients experienced itching and red eyes but no one in the 100,000 people tested experienced a change in their iris color.

Dr.  Leslie Baumann, Director of Cosmetic Dermatology at the University of Miami, says that after seeing such dramatic results (and no problems) in her patients, she started using Revitalash for herself. She did note, however, that since the compounds in Revitalash have changed (due to the rights Latisse has on using Bimatoprost, Revitalash has had to alter their solution to something similar but different) she now prefers Latisse. There has been a rare report of patients using Glaucoma drops experiencing a swelling of the retina, which blurs the vision. This, however, is extremely uncommon and usually encountered by people with pre-existing eye conditions.

    Budget Friendly or Splurge Worthy?

Pain is beauty and it’s kind of a pain to part with dollars right now…unless it’s worth it.

Revitalash is $150 but lasts for six months. So it ends up being about $25 per month.  Latisse is $120 for a one month supply but, unfortunately you don’t usually see full results till 4 months of use, so it’s more than the initial investment.  Think of it, though, as the equivalent of buying a cup of coffee every day and the money you’ll save on mascara replenishment.

Others range from $65 to $140 so either way you're gonna be plucking down cash.

    Formulas or Fakes?

These treatments can be used with fake eyelashes and mascara. Nelson says if you’re not up for taking these tools out of for a ride, try drugstore brand fake eyelashes (4.99, drugstores) and heavy mascara like YSL Faux Cils ($28.50, sephora.com) or L’Oreal Voluminous  Mascara, ($7.49, drugstores) because you’ll achieve that sultry drama you want, plus both mascaras won’t smudge and look great on everyone.

Yves Saint Laurent MASCARA VOLUME EFFET FAUX CILS Luxurious Mascara

$28.50 by Yves Saint Laurent at Sephora

Avoid eyelash extensions. Users complain that the heaviness of the fake lashes become uncomfortable. Many say that their eyes feel  irritable and maintaining the look every month is too costly (sometimes $400 an application).

There are plenty of options out there to create a look that screams sexy, young and hot! The resources are out there, it’s just a matter of deciding which avenue suits you best.

    A New Hue for Less!

    By the beauty buff · July 21, 2009 · 0 Comments · 135 Views

Skip your next salon appointment. Your new colorist is looking at you in the mirror.

Your bathroom may not look like your salon but it is. DIY tips to coloring away your imperfections.

In these tough economic times it seems like even getting a hair cut every three months is a bit of a luxury. So it comes as no surprise that most people are looking to save their pennies when it comes to coloring their hair. Getting your color revamped every few months by a professional is always ideal but it adds up quickly and sometimes means sacrificing other mind body & soul necessities. So before you start sacrificing your bi-weekly pilates classes for a colorist’s monthly touch, consider the merits of at-home coloring kits. With the right information and research it's very possible to not only do it successfully but also have it look like its been done by Louis Licari (or at least by his wildly-talented long-lost twin!).

Do your homework on the look you want and products you're going to use. Save dramatic color changes for trips to the salon. Embodying Ashlee Simpson's seamless transition from golden sun-kissed blond to fiery-rocker-chick red would be fun, but that kind of care can only be handled by a professional. Stay within your color range by at least two levels (darker or lighter). Anything more extreme will change the tones that compliment your complexion and not necessarily work with your skin.

Here looking like a quintessential beach blonde beauty.   Crimson locks & a rockstar hubby added just the right amount of  "street-cred."

    Finding Your Hair's Prince Charming

Just like your own undertones, your mane has natural undertones in cools and warms. People with warm tones tend to have darker skin while cools have fairer features. If you're a cool choose box tints with "ash, light, or cool" on them, while warm tones need "golden, butterscotch and rich" hues. Look at online color charts. Clairol and L'Oréal have comprehensive guides and experts to help guide you along. Clairol even has a "try it on" feature which enables you to see how you'd look with different styles and shades. Also Ask your hairstylist for advice on which color or brand is best suited for you. Since you're an amateur, DIY tinting should only be done with semi-permanent, single-processed or color-deposited dyes.

    http://www.hair-color-chart.info/clairol-hair-color-chart.php

With all this information, how do you choose your glass slipper; the package that's going to change your hair's life? In an interview with O magazine, Clairol Color Director and Co-Owner of NYC's Ted Gibson Salon, Jason Backe, has a few suggestions: "If you're covering grays try Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Color Treatment ($7.50). For a root touch-up, opt for Clairol's Nice 'n Easy Root Touch-Up ($7) but if you want to alter your hue choose a semi-permanent dye like L'Oréal ColorSpa Moisture Actif, ($8)."All brands are available at your local drugstore.

Keep your grays away with this powerhouse.

All you need is 10 minutes to recharge your color.

This one-click applicator boosts your hair's natural color.

We also love Feria Haircolor by L'Oreal ($10, drugstore.com). The inexpensive brand has a variety of shades to choose from and leaves your hair hydrated and silky. Nandini Giridharadas, a pottery teacher from Bethesda, MD who regularly uses Feria to cover her grays, swears by L'Oreal saying "the conditioner is so moisturizing and the shade (Dark-Golden-Brown) is perfect for my hair and skin tone".

The hues come out looking incredibly vibrant.

Erica Corsano, Editorial-Director at Stuff Magazine-Boston, adores Frederic Fekkai's Salon Hair-Color ($30-Sephora). For someone as busy as her (I was narrowly able to squeeze in an interview with her in-between the charity-fashion show she had just participated and blind-date she was heading out for), time is of the essence. Although Corsano sees a colorist, she mixes in using the hair-color kit because the color looks amazing, its so quick and easy to use and perfect for covering grays in between salon trips.

The "brush and bowl" technique allows for thorough and precise blending.

    Pre-Painting Chatter

Gather the tools you'll need for your mission. Find an old t-shirt, a timer, rubber gloves, brushes, clips to section off your hair, old towels and a hand mirror to look at the back of your head. Keep your strands unwashed as your scalp's natural oils act as a buffer to any irritants. Wait two weeks to color if you've bleached, permed or relaxed your tresses. In an interview done with Elle, Adrian Wallace, Celebrity-Colorist at NYC's Rita Hazan Salon recommends using Phyto's Phytonectar-Oil $30, Sephora) if you're locks are damaged. The nourishing treatment helps strengthen and moisturize your hair by restoring the amino acids lost from over-processing, using soybean and egg yolk and corn oil extracts.

Your hair will feel soft and shiny.

    Practice Makes Perfect!

It wouldn't fly if your colorist hadn't practiced before working on you, would it? It's no different for you, especially if you've never colored your own mane. Use gloves, a brush and conditioner to mimic the motion used from root to tip. Test a small patch of hair to see if you like the tint. Look at the color in bright natural light. You can make adjustments or mix colors at that point.

    Hair-We Go!

Use Vaseline on the outer edge of your hairline to prevent the dye from staining your forehead. If you do end up staining your skin use Roux Clean Touch Hair-Color Stain Remover ($3.39, amazon.com). Apply color to the front sections first and then work your way back since the front tends to be lightest. Reverse the procedure if you're lightening your tresses. Section off your locks into clips to help evenly distribute the dye. If mixing the solution is required, do so, then pour the contents into a plastic bowl. Use a brush as an applicator instead of a bottle as the brush is easier to spread the concoction evenly. If your hair is very long or thick, ask a friend for help. Each section needs to be colored, conditioned and dried separately so you'll need assistance. Leave the formula on for the exact time recommended and follow all directions closely including rinsing out mixture and using a color seal glaze. Don't shampoo again till at least 12 hours later and only use lukewarm water to protect the color from fading. Redo in four to six weeks.

The solution will help remove stains from your clothes.

Also try Avon Grey Root Touch-Up. ($5, avon.com) It’s easy to use, available in a ton of shades and incredibly affordable. Bonus: Throw it in your bag for a rush-hour commute application.

The mascara wand-like applicator is an industry favorite, winning a CEW Insider's Choice Award.

For a natural alternative Wallace likes vegetable dyes, like Herbavita ($10.34, online at amazon.com), sold at health food stores. They're great for pregnant women and clients looking to deepen their color at home. Get a box one shade lighter as they tend to come out darker than they appear.

    By the beauty buff · July 19, 2009 · 0 Comments · 69 Views

Out of Office Reply up? You're in Vacation-Mode!

Gain your world traveler wings with this season’s most skin suitable and smart to use products on-the-go.

Pack the tools that optimize space, time and effectiveness.

Summer has finally arrived! Shielding yourself from the bitter temperatures in your faux-fur parka and face wrap was mildly amusing, but now you're more than ready for warm weather and sunny beach days. You may not have the means to fund a Tahitian vacation-extraordinaire right now but wherever you decide to journey, (surf and sand at the Jersey Shore or poolside in Miami) you'll need the right accoutrement to make you're travels easy and skin effortlessly glowing. The fun of vacations is their sometimes unexpected nature. While spontaneity might work for your itinerary, it won't for your skincare routine. Packing products that are either multi-purpose or compact is a great start, but too often people compromise quality for travel ready. There's nothing worse than being in your dream location, ready to drink in the culture and night life but instead stressing over an inopportune zit or frizzy hair day (since your without your favorite products).

    Carry-on in style!

Dress your liquids up in packaging as stylish as your airport outfit.

Conveniently varied in style and size, Japonesque's Gotta Go Weekend Travel Bag ($20, amazon.com) comes with identification labels so you don't confuse your toner for mouthwash. This bag is perfect for all those obscure but necessary fluids that you must journey with.

Identifying adhesive labels make storing liquids easy.

    Skin Solutions for Every Surface

    “Hand-ie” for your face.

While this bottle may not appear travel-friendly, it is! Satin Soaps by Jason Natural Products ($6.75, jason-natural.com) is all natural and so gentle on your skin you can use it on your hands and face. We love the one infused with Herbal Extracts. It has avocado oil to moisturize and aloe vera to soothe the skin. Use this multi-faceted wash to cleanse your exterior and enjoy the satin smooth hydration you’ll experience. Throw some in one of your newly acquired airport-ready bottles.

The foaming solution will keep your hands and face soft to the touch.

It's summer so wearing thongs (sandals that is) is a given.

Outdoor activities can be rough on your feet. Having dry, calloused and cracked feet takes away from the beauty of your tanned, freshly manicured (in neon pink of course) toes. Tips 'N Toes Hands & Feet Kit by Burt's Bees ($8.50, burtsbees.com) includes a pumice stone, miniature peppermint lotion and creams in coconut and lemon butter. The concoctions smell delicious and are enriched with ultra moisturizing cocoa butter.

    I Can See Clearly Now

Topical treats that allows your summer skin be as clean and makeup free as possible. Don’t waste time on vacation doing prep-work when you can be squeezing in back to back activities. Sometimes, that means jumping from beach to bar without much time for touch-ups. Unfortunately, heat and humidity increases the activity in your oil glands causing pores to clog and creating breakouts. Try AcneRecovery's System Kit ($99, acnerecovery.com). These powerful treatments contain benzoyl-peroxide and salicylic-acid and come in convenient packaging. Additionally, their special "dial-in" technology allows you to adjust the amount of active ingredients you use depending on your needs. The clearer your skin, the less time you’ll spend applying makeup and the more confident you’ll feel in your new locale.

Other Travel Favorites Include: Solid perfume roll on sticks by Crazylibellule and the Poppies ($18, Poule de Luxe Vanilla Lemon Pie is my favorite), Yu-be Moisturizing Skin Cream To Go ($15), Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer To Go SPF 15 Dermaxyl Complex ($17) -all available sephora.com- and Oscar Blandi’s Proteine di Jasmine Protein Mist for Restyling Hair To Go ($8, drugstore.com)

Tip: Use the spray bottle for rosewater if you're on a plane. Spritz on your face after you land to rehydrate your moisture-thirsty skin. Try Pure Persian Rose Water by Julie Hewett ($24, thebeautymark.com)

    The Not-So Moody Blues

    By the beauty buff · July 18, 2009 · 0 Comments · 571 Views

Picasso would be proud! Blue makeup is this summer's hottest painted shade.

Summer is finally here and there's no better way to emphasize a newly acquired glow than with this season's hottest color, blue. Find that shade that’s best for you and you'll see how fabulous and wearable it really is. Blues intensify and brighten your eyes by bringing out the warm toned contrasts and specks within your iris, while cerulean, azure, and cobalt polish shades draw attention to radiant skin. No costume parties are needed to relish in a look that might have conjured up images of Smurfette in the past but is nothing short of fashion forward and fabulous, today.

Create a sultry smoky eye using products that look dramatic when mixed together but when worn individually also look gorgeous for a day time look. Try Duwop's Blue Eyes Palette ($32, beauty.com) and Bobbi Brown's Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner ($21, bobbibrown.com) in Cobalt or Indigo Ink.

Before slipping on your wedges, paint your toes with a vibrant blue like OPI Nail Polish in No Room for the Blues ($8.50, amazon.com).

Tip: Keep your shadows from clumping, especially in the heat, with Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($17, Sephora.com) and turn them into long lasting richly-hued liners with Paula Dorf's Transformer ($19, drugstore.com). If you're feeling extra pale, lather on some self-tanner like Clarin's Self Tanning Instant Gel ($32, sephora.com) to make the color pop.

Here are some of our favorite Hollywood starlets sporting their color of choice:

Eye Opening Results: Shape Your Brows to Shape Your Face

Eyebrows Can Instantly Change Your Look. Learn How to Enhance Your Appearance With Easy Tweezing Secrets.

Groomed brows open up the eyes and present a polished, fresh-faced look. LA-based "Eyebrow-King" Damone Roberts, owner of Damone Roberts Salons, likens eyebrows to a frame and the face to a picture. The frame changes the perception of the picture and can enhance or take away from its beauty. Tina Turnbow, Beauty.com makeup-artist and NYC native, agrees, “eyebrows make the face unique".

Beware of caterpillars brows. They're hindering your face from unleashing its inner butterfly. Although furrowed tufts are unsightly, pencil-thin Betty Boop-tadpoles suggests perpetual surprise; not ideal for oozing sophistication.

Luckily, while other maintenances are best suited for a professional (DIY bikini wax? yikes!), tackling your brows with tweezers, tools and some tips is ideal. Its the wallet-friendly approach to getting a precisely manicured look.

    - Invest in tweezers. The slanted pair by Tweezerman ($20, tweezerman.com) grips effectively and has a lifetime sharpening guarantee.

-Find a "does-it-all" kit. Try tarte’s the tool box: brow know-how ($32, drugstore.com). It contains a gel, pencil, wax, brush, powder, etc.

    - Lessen the pain. Apply teething gel to the area as it will numb the skin and feel less raw and sensitive afterwards.

-Use a magnifying mirror in a well-lit place to do an effective job. Dimly lit areas prevent you from seeing the tiny hairs to remove and make your more prone to over-tweezing.

    Tweezing

    - Run your finger along your brow bone to find your natural arch-shape. Hold a pencil vertically at the corner of your eye to identify where the brow should begin. The highest point of your arch should coincide with the edge of the iris. The line should extend slightly past the corner of your eye.

-Brush hairs up to reveal strays. Draw over your desired shape with a flesh-colored pencil to use as a plucking-guide.

-Remove hairs individually from alternating sides to even frames. Step back and see your work to avoid over-plucking.

    Post-Op

-Brush and apply brow gel to set hair in place.

-Pluck-happy? Use powder (taupe for lighter hair, brown-black for darker hair) to fill gaps.

Tip: Use a toothbrush or old mascara wand as a brow brush. Spray a brush with hairspray if you don't have a wax or gel. To stimulate hair growth use olive oil to condition your brows. Use a shadow or eyebrow pencil that’s one shade lighter than your actual hair color to brighten and open your face up.

Here are some Celeb brows we feel some arch envy over:
